Yoga is a type of exercise that not only involves the body but also the mind and conduct in order to promote optimal health throughout the lifespan and improve various elements of physical and mental health. Yoga practice dates back to around 300 BCE in ancient India, when it was a word with a variety of implications and has since evolved. Yoga’s modern practice is divided into three parts: posture/poses, breath control/regulated breathing, and meditation/relaxation. There are numerous styles of yoga that differ in terms of intensity, difficulty, and how postures are held. Certain forms of yoga practices also have different breathing patterns and meditation techniques. 2021) (Fishbein).
Yoga practice provides fitness, strength, flexibility, balance, and mobility, as well as reduced stress and anxiety, a higher quality of life, a feeling of spirituality, cognitive function and impairment, and pain control. 2021) (Fishbein). Yoga has been demonstrated in studies to reduce stress, anxiety, despair, and pain while also improving emotional well-being. Yoga’s mindfulness practices are regarded to be especially effective for anxiety and depression symptoms by promoting emotional regulation. Bystritsky (Bystritsky, 2021)
Injuries are one of the risks linked with yoga. Yoga, as a physical practice, has the potential to cause harm. Minor injuries have been linked to yoga in several observational studies, although significant injuries are uncommon. Sprains and strains are the most prevalent types of musculoskeletal ailments. The trunk and lower extremities are the most commonly used body areas. 2021) (Fishbein).
Yoga treatment is available in a variety of settings. You can attend in-person sessions with an instructor in your community, or you can watch videos online to practice at home. There are numerous free videos available online for novices. There are other streaming sites that offer a variety of yoga classes ranging from beginning to advanced. According to a 2012 poll, 48.8 percent of Americans who practiced yoga did so at home and did not attend regular sessions. (Cramer and colleagues, 2018)
Several clinical research have demonstrated that yoga can help reduce anxiety levels. In a pilot study conducted by Massachusetts General Hospital, 29 adults who performed Bikram yoga at least twice a week for eight weeks had significantly reduced symptoms of depression as well as increased their quality of life, optimism, and cognitive and physical functioning. APA (2017) Many other studies have been conducted, some with Veterans, that suggest that with a regular weekly practice of yoga, their sadness and perhaps anxiety levels do decrease. Although the concept of yoga as a treatment for depression is still in its early stages and can only be recommended as a supplement to normal practices, there does appear to be some potential.
