CASE 11
In studying the subculture of a particular group, a sociologist must be accepted by the people and gain their trust. One such researcher is studying the people in an urban slum. She learns through their confidence that certain members of the community are involved in a car-theft ring. She does not report them to the police.
2. Your Written Case Analysis on this case needs to be at least 200 words. One thing you need to do is identify the parties at stake and the moral issues at stake.
3. In addition to talking about the parties at stake and the moral issues at stake in this case, you need to do one more thing. You need to need to analyze this case in terms of one of the following (you pick which one): what virtues are at stake or which relationships of care are at stake. Here’s how to do that.
a) If you choose what virtues are at stake, think about what virtues the sociologist in this case may be practicing. Also, think about what virtues this sociologist may be lacking. Then explain what, ultimately, virtues would say about this case.
b) If you choose which relationships of care are at stake, think about why someone may think that given the sociologists relationship with the people living in this slum it is appropriate for her not to mention the car-theft ring. Also, think about why someone may think that given the sociologists relationship with the people living in this slum she should report the car-theft ring. Then, explain what, ultimately, you think the ethics of care would say about this case.
4. You essay needs to be at least 200 words minimum and it needs to use proper MLA documentation.
