Format and Length
A minimum of 1800 words is required. The format for references will follow MLA 9th edition
citation style.
At least eight sources must be used and cited in-text and listed properly on the Works Cited page in the
final draft of your paper. The variety of publication mediums used is relevant to the subject matter. The
majority of sources must be library resources.
The final paper is a demonstration of the students’ cumulative knowledge of the research subject chosen
for the project (Research Proposal).
Your final paper will include a synthesized argument and supporting evidence, demonstrate
originality, and follow MLA citation style. Students are responsible for reading, understanding, and
applying these academic guidelines. Presentation, accuracy, and originality are vitally important in
scholarly writing, especially that which is research-based and formatted according to MLA standards.
Papers will follow essay format (introduction with a synthesized argument, body/supporting paragraphs,
and a conclusion followed by a Works Cited page). Sub-headings may be used throughout the paper to
ease flow/readability and support organization. Visuals (charts, graphs, pictures, and images of any sort)
are allowed and encouraged if relevant to your research subject.
DO NOT create a separate title page; MLA papers include a standard heading (top left), title (centered),
page numbers (top rt.). There are examples of MLA research papers in The Little Seagull. and
Everyone’s an Author.
Avoid use of second person. A focus on the subject itself is required (third person), and any shifts to
first person must be relevant and necessary to the discussion of the subject material. Read “Point of
View (1st, 2nd, 3rd)” in the Instructional Handouts module in Canvas.
Proofread carefully for sentence-level distractions (grammar, punctuation, spelling, typos). Use the built
in spell checker/grammar checker to help you catch errors and typos.
Papers that do not meet research and length guidelines or follow a citation format other than
MLA are ungradable and will receive minimal credit, if any credit at all.
