Reflection Assignment #4 – Small Group Research:
For this exercise, you will observe a small group in a naturalistic setting. You will choose one topic to analyze. Your observation time should be around 2 hours. (It can be done in one sitting or in multiple times throughout the week, if this is something that is difficult for you to do)
Step 1. Identify Your Group and Pick a topic that you want to know more about as it relates to your group (1/2 – 1 page) Describe how you identified your group and which topic/question you wanted to know more about as it relates to your small group. – Pick one of these possible topics: – how does group identity gets created and sustained within your group; – how does one become a member of the group and how group socialize new members; – how do members of the group provide social support to each other; – how do members develop high quality interpersonal relationships – Does being a part of this group lead to any kind of anti-social behavior? – How does the group maintain “in-group” status and who plays the role of an “out-group” to this group; how do you know? – How do cooperative activities impact this group? – How do competitive activities impact this group?
Step 2. Describe your observation setting in great detail.(1 -2 pages) Provide a rich description of the setting and context in which your group occurs.
Step 3. Establish that your group is a bona fide group (1/2 – 1 page): Describe how your group has permeable boundaries. Describe how members of your group are interdependent.
Step 4. Observe (Participate), take notes, ask questions (1 – 2 pages): Through observation and asking questions, collect enough data about your group so that you can capture fully the ways in which your group members construct their group. You may want to have a conversation with a couple of people separate from the group in order to ask them questions to verify or clarify things that you have observed as it relates to your topic.
Step 5. Using the Diagram of Naturalistic Inquiry as Inspiration: Analyze Your Data (1 – 2 pages) Describe your findings and draw some conclusions as it relates to your question.
