Theme:
Situational leadership is a common approach to management that has been implemented throughout various organizations in the public sector (Northouse, 2019). Research shows that leadership styles vary from person to person and are not one size fits all. According to Hersey et al., “successful leaders are those who can adapt their behavior to meet the demands of their own unique situation” (Hersey et al., 1997, p.5). An effective situational leader assesses their team’s performance and adjusts the amount of direction and support they give based on the “readiness” or commitment level that their followers’ exhibit (Hersey et al., 1997). Situational leadership is an important skill to have as a public servant as I am responsible for addressing various constituent concerns, political issues, and community projects.
Relevance:
In the public sector, my primary concern is to make decisions for the greater good of the public. I am directly responsible for bringing new commercial and residential projects through the entitlement process. I work with developers, residents, the planning commission, and the city council to bring a project from a preliminary idea through to final certificates of occupancy. Because of this, it is important for me to use situational leadership in all aspects of my job. I use situational leadership to address the concerns of council members and residents when they are negatively affected by a project by adapting their leadership style to the demands of the situation. During initial project meetings, I assess the situation and adjust the amount of direction I give based on the commitment level of the applicant. If they appear to be fully committed to the project’s success, I will provide considerable support and direction to them. The situational leadership approach is an effective method of leadership when dealing with various actors and followers in the public sector. According to Shonhiwa, a leader can determine what is needed in a particular situation based on an assessment of how competent and committed a follower is to perform a given task. He states that “leaders should change the degree to which they are directive or supportive to meet the changing needs of subordinates” (Shonhiwa, 2016).
