This essay employs the interview assignment completed earlier. This is not a second interview. Recap: Interview a bilingual friend, family member, or neighbor (make up an interview since one is not provided you may want to include specific questions such as, in which language do they tend to count or do general math? In which language do they dream? Do they feel more comfortable in one language over another? Do they consider themselves bicultural as well as bilingual? In which language do they write? This interview will form the basis of our final paper so gather as much information as you can.). Ask him/her/them to provide examples of when and why they use each language as well as when, why, and how they may code-switch. Make note of the social context involved in their language choices. Based on both our readings in this course and on your interview above, write an essay (700-800) words in length typed double-spaced in which you examine the role of society and community in language choice, as well as the impact on the speaker. Be sure to address the following in your essay: Clearly articulate your position on the role of one’s society and community in language choice. Present information from our readings that support your view. Support your position with examples from your interview. Consider and identify any objections or limitations before articulating your conclusion. Articulate a conclusion grounded in steps 1-4 above.
